A US broadcaster has picked up natural history special Shark Girl from its Australian distributor.

Smithsonian Channel has acquired the 57-minute film, which tells the story of Madi Stewart, who left school at 14 to film sharks without the protection of a cage and armed only with a small video camera.

“Madi is a remarkable and charismatic young woman with an extraordinary passion for saving sharks,” said David Royle, executive VP for programming and production at Smithsonian Channel.

ABC Commercial distributes the one-off ABC special, which is produced by Kaufmann Productions and has received funding from Screen Australia.
