Domestic abuse has no borders, millions of women across the world live in fear. Brutal attacks happen everyday and shockingly two women are murdered by their partners every week. But what is it really like to live through it?

In this documentary special, domestic abuse victims Hazel and Kelly bravely allow the cameras into their lives. From the moment of being attacked the film follows the women as they seek help in the aftermath and face on going abuse. With unprecedented access to the police dealing with their cases and to the women themselves, this documentary reveals the realities of what it is like to be abused by someone you once loved.

Powerful, emotional and shocking, this is not a past tense story; it is real, up close and personal.

HAZEL thought that she had found love and tried to ignore the warning signs when her partner became increasingly controlling and violent. The film follows Hazel after she is brutally attacked with her partner punching her and stamping on her head with reinforced boots.

KELLY at first denies the abuse to the police. It takes several more attacks before she finally tells the truth about her husband’s controlling and coercive behaviour. When Kelly finally admits everything to the police her husband goes on the run and continues to stalk and harass her. The film charts the threat and fear that she lives through until he is finally arrested months later.

The Abused is a revealing look at the day to day abuse that many women are subjected to by their partners. It chronicles the fear that prevents them seeking help and the long term struggle to seek justice.
